Cybersecurity for SMEs
Small and mid-sized organisations face largely the same threats as large enterprises, with a fraction of the internal capacity to address them. The gap is rarely tooling. It's not having anyone senior enough to decide what to fix first.
Where risk concentrates
Business email compromise and invoice fraud targeting finance staff
Ransomware, often via a single unpatched or unmanaged endpoint
Credential theft through phishing, with no MFA to stop reuse
Third-party/supplier compromise, since SMEs are frequently the weaker link in a larger supply chain
Attack surface
Typically Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, a handful of SaaS tools, and a mixed device fleet with inconsistent management, often without a dedicated IT security function overseeing all of it.
Regulatory considerations
GDPR applies regardless of size, and NIS2's expanded scope is pulling in more mid-sized organisations than many expect. Customer security questionnaires are increasingly common even for SMEs selling to larger clients.
Business impact
A single successful ransomware or fraud incident can be existential for a smaller organisation in a way it wouldn't be for an enterprise with more financial resilience and redundancy.
